Don't Let Them Box You In...
Traits of Trailblazers & Trendsetters
There were so many shows I watched growing up that defined the era of my childhood. Different Strokes, The Facts of Life, 227, Alice, and Good Times are just a few examples that offered a glimpse into family life, friendship, and the kind of humor and heart that shaped a generation. As I sit here and reflect on them brings back waves of nostalgia. Another show that I loved from then was Sesame Street. I remember one particular segment that would come on from time to time where four kids would appear in four separate squares on the screen, and this song would come on, which said:
“Three of these kids belong together,
Three of these kids are kind of the same.
But one of these kids is doing their own thing—
Now it’s time to play our game. It’s time to play our game.”
The idea was simple and childlike but powerful: out of the four kids, three were doing something similar, but one stood out—doing something completely different.
I believe that’s how life is to be lived and how we were meant to be. Originals, not carbon copies of other people.
In a world that constantly pressures us to “conform to the norm,” blend in, and tone it down, we need people who are courageous and bold enough to stand out. People who refuse to water down who they are just to make others comfortable. People who refuse to dim their lights because others think it's too bright.
Some people spend their entire lives trying to fit in instead of being like that kid on Sesame Street—living in a way that is different and authentic. But trailblazers and trendsetters don’t play by the rules of conformity. They understand that if you want to make a significant impact and difference in the world, you can’t be afraid to color outside the lines.
The Path of the Trailblazer
Trailblazers rarely walk well-worn paths. They carve out new ones—many times this is done, unfortunately, through resistance, lots of misunderstanding, and opposition. They don’t intentionally try and be a “pain” to anyone, but they cannot help but be a catalyst that brings change. It’s how you’ve been wired by God. It is part of your divine design.
Trailblazers aren’t always the loudest in the room, but they are often the most deeply convicted.
Their internal compass is set to purpose, not popularity. Their confidence doesn’t come from being liked—it comes from being aligned with the mission that they seek to carry out. They’re pioneers who see something that doesn’t yet exist and move toward it anyway. I’ve always tried my best to live my life in this way.
Anytime when I’ve tried to conform, it felt unnatural. I had to quickly learn that this was ok. It is ok to think and live differently. Not in an arrogant, cocky, reckless, or brash way, but in a way that honors the unique path God has placed before you. Even when others refuse to understand it. Even when it costs you relationships, comfort, or clout—even if it makes you the odd one out.
Over the years, I’ve met many people who are perfectly comfortable living outside the box. They aren’t trying to blend in—they’re committed to being who they were created to be. And I’ve noticed something: those who dare to be different often share a set of powerful, consistent traits.
Traits of Trailblazers and Trendsetters
Here are some qualities and traits that set trailblazers and trendsetters apart from the crowd:
1. Courage to Be First
They’re not waiting for approval. They step out when others hesitate. They understand that the road less traveled is often lonely—but also legendary.
2. Clarity of Vision
They have a deep inner knowing that what they carry matters—even if others can’t see it yet. They may not have all the answers, but they have a strong sense of direction. That’s enough to move forward.
3. They Take Risks
Playing it safe never made history. Trailblazers are willing to bet on themselves and their calling, knowing that progress requires a level of discomfort.
4. They Resist (or break) the Mold
They don’t conform—they challenge convention. Trends don’t define them—they create new ones. Their authenticity disrupts the status quo.
5. Creative Conviction
They don’t copy. They create. They’re visionaries with the courage to innovate, even when it means being misunderstood for a season.
6. Unapologetic Authenticity
They bring their whole selves to the table—no masks, no filters. They understand that being real is more powerful than being accepted.
7. Resilience in Rejection
They’ve heard “no” more times than they can count. But they’ve also learned that rejection isn’t the end—it’s often a redirection toward something greater.
8. Discernment of Timing
They’re not just bold—they’re wise. They know when to speak and when to listen, when to wait and when to act. Their timing is strategic, not impulsive.
9. Devotion to Purpose
Purpose is their anchor. When storms come, they don’t drift—they double down. They live with intentionality, guided by something bigger than applause.
10. They Inspire Others to Rise
Trailblazers don’t just break barriers for themselves—they do it so others can walk through the doors they opened. Their boldness gives others permission to dream, to lead, and to believe that they can do it too.
If you’ve been struggling to fit in, maybe it’s because you weren’t meant to. You were made for more. You were made to create, to shift culture, to defy the odds, and to bring something into the world that no one else can.
You don’t need to explain your calling to everyone. You don’t need validation to follow what God placed in your heart. You just need the faith to keep going when it feels like you’re the only one who sees it.
Let this be a reminder:
Your difference is not a defect—it’s a divine distinction.
Don’t shrink to make others comfortable.
Don’t compromise to gain their approval.
Don’t play small to avoid their criticism.
You are not too much. Your vision is not too big. Your voice is not too loud.
If you let people box you in, you’ll never become the version of you that God intended. So, keep showing up. Keep going against the grain. Keep building. Keep leading. Keep blazing those trails.
Because you weren’t made to fit in. You were born to stand out.
Question for Reflection:
Where have you been trying to fit in when God has called you to stand out?

So good! Coming into the “church world” I really stood out like a sore thumb cuz I wasn’t previe to “church culture/standards/protocal” didn’t realize how spiritually lethargic some people were especially if they had grown up super religious and here I was really like WOW isn’t Jesus Ah-MAY-zing???? They were not trying to fool with me 😆 but I understand better now as God has shown me some of the “why” people respond to that type of energy like they do. This was an encouraging read, I’ll keep it with me in my pocket and prayers! Thank you.
I thought the audio was gonna be YOU! 😭😩 looks like I boxed you in… 😞 😆
